ITT Core Content Framework

The ITT Core Content Framework (CCF) and, it’s partner the Early Career Framework (ECF), establish an entitlement to a 3-year structured package of support for future generations of teachers. They place an expectation on training providers and schools, in partnership, to ensure that the knowledge and skills detailed in the frameworks are covered, as a minimum entitlement. 

A summary of each strand of the CCF:

  • Strand 1: High Expectations (HE)
  • Key themes: teacher as role model; setting clear expectations; promoting wellbeing, motivation and behaviour of pupils; creating a positive classroom environment
  • Strand 2: How Pupils Learn (HPL)
  • Key themes: learning as a lasting change in pupils’ knowledge and understanding; the role of prior knowledge; avoiding cognitive overload; breaking complex material into small steps; the importance of repetition and practice (including retrieval)
  • Strand 3: Subject and Curriculum (S&C)
  • Key themes: the importance of secure subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge; anticipating common misconceptions; explicit teaching of new knowledge and skills; the importance of sequencing so new knowledge builds on current understanding
  • Strand 4: Classroom Practice (CP)
  • Key themes: breaking down tasks into small steps; the use of modelling, explanations and scaffolds; developing metacognitive strategies; the importance of questioning; high quality classroom talk; the importance of repetition and practice (including retrieval)
  • Strand 5: Adaptive Teaching (AT)
  • Key themes: understanding different levels of prior knowledge and potential barriers to learning; responding to pupil need; flexible grouping; supporting pupils with SEND effectively; scaffolding to make tasks and activities accessible
  • Strand 6: Assessment (A)
  • Key themes: the role of formative assessment; using it to check for understanding, identify misconceptions and inform decision-making; high-quality feedback; making marking manageable and effective
  • Strand 7: Managing Behaviour (MB)
  • Key themes: the importance of routines, positive reinforcement and a predictable and secure environment; supporting pupils to self-regulate their emotions; building effective relationships; the role of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
  • Strand 8: Professional Behaviours (PB)
  • Key themes: reflective practice; contributions to the wider life of the school; building effective relationships with families and colleagues; seeking feedback and guidance from mentors; engaging critically with research
