South Farnham SCITT's new PGCE partnership with University of Brighton

South Farnham SCITT is delighted to announce a new partnership with the University of Brighton as the accrediting university for its PGCE. This collaboration marks an exciting new chapter in our provision of postgraduate teacher training, ensuring our trainees now benefit from the expertise of one of the country’s leading centres of teacher education.

South Farnham SCITT has a long and successful track record of training outstanding teachers across its network of over 115 partner schools, with Ofsted grading the programme ‘outstanding’. While the PGCE route has been part of our offer for many years, this new partnership with the University of Brighton greatly strengthens the academic provision, enriching and extending our curriculum, and ensuring that all trainees receive a first-rate postgraduate qualification alongside Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

Ann-Marie Bahaire, Director of Initial Teacher Training at South Farnham SCITT, said “We are delighted to be working with the University of Brighton, whose reputation and commitment to excellence in teacher education align so closely with our own. Their support in rapidly developing and approving our PGCE has been exemplary, and the programme they bring not only complements but deepens the school-centred training we provide.

“This strengthened partnership reflects our continued mission to give trainees the very best start to their teaching careers, so that children across the South East benefit from high-quality, evidence-informed teaching.”

Up to 120 trainees each year will follow the enhanced PGCE route, combining South Farnham SCITT’s school-based expertise with Brighton’s academic leadership. This ensures our trainees not only gain QTS but also develop as reflective, research-informed practitioners ready to thrive in the classroom.

Senior lecturer and course convenor, Richard Harvey-Swanston, commented: “It has been a pleasure to welcome the first cohort onto the new PGCE route in partnership with South Farnham SCITT. Together, we are offering a programme that blends both institutions’ strengths, giving trainees an exceptional foundation for their teaching careers.”

Andy Davies, Deputy Dean of Education, Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Brighton, added: “We are thrilled to be working with such an outstanding provider of teacher education as South Farnham SCITT. Our collaboration has already been hugely rewarding, and we are excited to build on this successful partnership.”

Since 2019 the University of Brighton has successfully partnered with SCITT providers such as Inspiring Future Teachers across England. This new collaboration ensures South Farnham SCITT’s PGCE remains one of the strongest available in the region, delivered by two Ofsted-outstanding providers with a shared vision of preparing exceptional teachers for the future.
